Dmitri Matheny Group featuring Holly Pyle
JAZZ FROM THE SILVER SCREEN
Thursday November 15th 2018
7.30 pm

Voted “NW Instrumentalist of the Year” in the recent Seattle Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards, flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny leads an all-star band featuring Phoenix vocalist Holly Pyle in an evening of Jazz From The Silver Screen. Showcasing favorite movie themes from the 1930s to the present day, the program includes music from The Wizard of Oz (1939), Oklahoma! (1955), An Affair To Remember (1957), Black Orpheus (1959), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), The Godfather (1972), and many many more

Celebrated for her “soulfully graceful, liquid-like voice” (Phoenix New Times),  Holly Pyle started out as an opera major before studying jazz and psychology at Northern Arizona University. Now one of the most popular vocalists in the Valley of the Sun, where she performs regularly.

Flugelhorn master Dmitri Matheny has been lauded as “one of the most emotionally expressive improvisers of his generation” (International Review of Music). An honors graduate of Berklee College of Music, Dmitri Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following. The San Francisco Chronicle calls Matheny “one of the jazz world’s most talented horn players.”

Sharing the stage with Pyle and Matheny are NW all-stars, pianist Bill Anschell, bassist Phil Sparks, and drummer Mark Ivester.
